How to prepare your baby for their first day at nursery

Starting nursery is a milestone — and it's completely normal to feel a little anxious. With a bit of preparation, the transition can be smooth and even exciting.
Visit together first
Most childcare centres in Malta welcome a settling-in visit. Spend time in the room with your child so the space and the carers become familiar faces before day one.
Build a routine early
In the week before starting, gently shift nap and meal times to match the nursery's schedule. Predictability helps children feel secure.
Create a goodbye ritual
A short, consistent goodbye — a hug, a wave at the window — reassures your child far more than a drawn-out farewell.
Pack a comfort item
A familiar blanket or soft toy can be a huge comfort during the first few days.
Remember: tears at drop-off usually stop within minutes. Your childcare team does this every day and will keep you updated.
